Aggregate Industries have been shortlisted for two edie awards, which celebrate sustainability leadership.

Originally launched in 2006, the edie Awards recognise people, projects and pioneering organisations from across the UK, who’s innovations are transforming businesses for good. The awards have undergone a major facelift for 2025, with additional categories added and a suite
of new expert judges. The ceremony will take place on Thursday 13 March 2025, at London’s InterConintental, The 02.

Aggregate Industries are on a mission to decarbonise the construction industry and are on track to become carbon neutral by 2050. As a business, they have spent significant amounts of R&D on innovative products and processes, designed to reduce their carbon impact and make sustainable alternatives easier for the customers to source.

The nomination for Building/Infrastructure project of the year is thanks to work with Canary Wharf Group (CWG) on its Wood Wharf development – Europe’s largest urban regeneration project. AIUK and CWG recycled approximately 2,500 tonnes of material from a decommissioned marine deck from the One North Quay project site, to be used in a residential building at Wood Wharf.

The materials were demolished at North Quay, transported less than 1 mile away to AIUK’s Sivyer facility for crushing and processing, and then turned into low-carbon concrete. The concrete contained 20% recycled aggregates resulting in 30% less CO2 emissions. The project
also used a new technology that captures and permanently binds CO2 in the recycled concrete.

AIUK have also been shortlisted for the Nature & Biodiversity award, following the plantation of a 64-hectare native woodland at its Glensanda Quarry on the north shore of Loch Linnhe.

This 105,000-tree plantation is located in a remote and environmentally under-recorded part of Scotland, providing much needed restoration to habitats that have been in decline for several decades. The project was undertaken as part of AI UK own nature strategy, which is aligned to the Science Based Target Network for Nature Framework.

Anna Baker, Sustainability Director at Aggregate Industries said “Our mission to become a carbon neutral business is a key driver in everything we do at Aggregate Industries. We want to drive change within the construction industry and make it easier for our customers to make sustainable choices.

“Both of these projects are a clear demonstration of our commitment to the circular economy, and doing the right thing because you can, not just because you should. Our people are the heartbeat of what we do and why we do it and I’m immensely proud of the work they’ve done
this year. We’re nominated alongside some truly incredible projects and wish the best of luck to everyone nominated for an award.”
