Specialist Rail and traction Sands

Our specialist sands’ specific grain shape and free-flowing composition makes it ideal for use in sand boxes on locomotives and trams for breaking assistance. Sand is used on railway tracks for braking to improve the traction between the train wheels and the rails, especially in conditions where the tracks may be slippery due to rain, ice, or leaves.

Improved Traction

When a train needs to stop or slow down, the wheels apply a braking force to the tracks. Sand, when applied to the rails, increases the friction between the wheels and the tracks, providing better grip and reducing the chances of slipping.

Enhanced Safety

By improving traction, sand helps trains stop more effectively, which is crucial for maintaining safety, particularly in emergencies. In situations where the train needs to come to a sudden stop, having sufficient friction can prevent accidents.

Braking Performance

Sand ensures that braking performance remains consistent, even in adverse weather conditions. Whether the tracks are wet, icy, or covered in leaves, the application of sand can help maintain a steady braking force, ensuring the train operates safely and efficiently.

Why Choose Our Rail Sand?

The use of sand on rail tracks is vital for ensuring the safety, efficiency, and reliability of railway operations. By improving traction, enhancing braking performance, and preventing damage, sand plays a critical role in the day-to-day functioning of rail networks, particularly in challenging weather conditions. Our rail grip sands are compliant with industry standards BS EN 12904 and ENAT 97-1 specification for thermal sands, ensuring consistent performance every time.
Sanding systems are used in rail vehicles to improve friction between wheel and track. Operation is either automatic or can be initiated by the driver, who can use it in a targeted way for starting up and braking. During emergency braking, sanding is automatically activated.
As a train slows down on steep grades and tight curves, or approaches a signal light or stopping destination, sanding assists in preventing the wheels from sliding as the braking systems are applied.

Supersand

SuperSand 97-1, is a specialised backfill material for power cable installations. The certified cable sand, which is ENA TS 97-1 compliant, is suitable for installation and backfilling of underground high voltage cables. Primarily for use in rail, energy and utilities projects, SuperSand 97-1 meets all the thermal properties required by specification.
Available as unbound sand, in application it easily compacts around power cables to effectively conduct heat away from the source and prevent electrical resistance. Available nationwide across a range of Aggregate Industries sites.

Garside Rail grip 2ew

Garside Rail Grip 2EW is a dried silica sand which can be used as a traction sand. Traction sand is indispensable in optimising train performance. The trains have an electronic traction control system that automatically starts the sand sprayers when the wheels slop or when an emergency stop is needed. The sand sprayers work by spraying Garside Rail Grip 2EW in front of a locomotive's wheels, enabling enhanced traction and braking power. Garside Rail Grip 2EW also helps with wear-down deposits on the rails over time by enhancing traction with the rails this increases the traction of the drive wheels.
