Warm mix asphalt
Warm Mix Asphalt (WMA)
We’re committed to making it easier than ever to build sustainably and have a range of sustainable solutions to suit every application. Switching from hot to warm mix asphalt is just one of the ways you can help to reduce CO2 emissions and deliver on your own Net Zero targets.
What is warm mix asphalt (WMA)?
WMA is mixed at a lower heat than traditional hot mix asphalt (HMA), this produces less CO2 emissions during manufacture, which results in a more sustainable solution for road applications.
In short, warm mix asphalt reduces CO2 emissions by using less fossil fuels and resources during the manufacturing process.
Performance not compromised
Through extensive product testing as well as the introduction of innovative new additives and technologies, we’ve been able to produce a product which has been verified to meet national specification standards, including National Highways standard (SHW clause 908).
National Highways Endorsed
In 2021 National Highways officially recognised the correlation between WMA and carbon reduction and requested that everyone involved in the construction and maintenance of the strategic road network, use warm mix asphalts as their default surfacing material.
What are the benefits?
The environmental benefits of using warm mix asphalt, include:
- A typical 10-15% carbon reduction (HMA vs WMA)
- reduced project costs
- enhanced life-expectancy
On-site benefits:
- reduced nuisance fuming
- minimal odour and steam at the project site
- safer working conditions at both the plant and site
