Derby's historic Moorways Leisure Centre has been given an update with locally supplied Charcon Hard Landscaping products
The PROJECT
Moorways Leisure Centre is a Derby institution. From hosting athletes preparing for the Olympic games, to scuba diving clubs, to the Derby Storm basketball team, the historic multisport venue had seen it all in its 44 year existence between 1974 and its demolition in 2018.
2019 saw the start of construction of a new Moorways that would offer incredible features like a 50m pool, England’s first ‘wave rider’, a state-of-the-art gym and even a beach area.
Such a grand, locally significant project has equally significant hard landscaping requirements - and that is where Charcon has excelled.
The BRIEF
Principle contractor Bowmer and Kirkland and subcontractor McDermotts required a paving solution that not only delivered in terms of aesthetic and general performance, but paving used on the parking area needed to be able to deal with the regular rainfall the UK experiences.
Furthermore, it was stipulated that the provider of the paving be local to the project and have significant experience of large-scale public realm projects.
The SOLUTION
To meet the brief, Charcon supplied its Woburn Original paving in Graphite, alongside its premium, hard-wearing Andover Textured concrete flags.
The car park has benefitted from Charcon’s Andover Infilta permeable paving. Infilta incorporates the unique characteristics of the Andover modular paving range, with its hidden nibs offering a discreet sustainable drainage solution. Furthermore, Infilta offers ~53% recycled content - a major boost to the construction’s sustainability credentials.
Commenting on the project, Charcon’s National Sales Manager Robert Davenhall said: “We’re delighted to have supplied Moorways with our paving solutions. The project is important to the local community and it always brings us great pride to see our products in situ while people enjoy the facilities.
“Furthermore, with the challenges brought by the pandemic, I personally couldn’t be prouder of the way our teams and the contractors we worked with handled themselves.”
Simon Monk, Purchasing and Supply Manager at McDermotts added: “The solutions Charcon brought to the table were exactly what we were looking for. They are a perfect combination of aesthetics, performance and reliability.
“We’re delighted with how the project has gone, and how Charcon have communicated and worked with us throughout the project despite all the issues surrounding the pandemic.”
Ultimately, the keys to Moorways were handed over on time and budget in May 2022, despite the pandemic - and Charcon is delighted to have played its part.
