The brief

Knapp Mill Water Works required immediate servicing on their slow sand and pressure filters and issued a just in time reactive contract. Aggregate Industries supplied technical sand within 72 hours of assessing the filters in order to ensure service levels could be maintained and water quality levels were improved.

The challenge

Bournemouth Water (BW) has been in operation since 1863 and serves over 205,000 homes. Eager to maintain the delivery of world-class drinking water BW, ordered an investment into their Knapp Mill Water Treatment Centre, which included the servicing of their large-scale slow sand and rapid gravity filters.
The servicing of these filters required over 600 tonnes of sand to be delivered.

THE SOLUTION

Working alongside Hamilton Riley, Aggregate Industries ensured the quick-fire delivery of over 600 tonnes of slow sand and 14/25 sand to Bournemouth Water Works. The filtration media was delivered in tote bags and loose in bulk tippers sourced from either Leighton Buzzard or Colchester.

Drivers were tasked with navigating heavy industrial and domestic traffic whilst conducting their deliveries, but clear channels of communication with both Bournemouth Water and Hamilton Riley ensured site plans and access routes were confirmed before materials were due on site.
Typically, deliveries are organized eight-to-twelve weeks prior works taking place, but in order to maintain water quality levels and avoid disruption to customers sand was delivered to site just 72 hours after the order was placed.

The first delivery landed in October 2023, and thanks to four deliveries per day, the project was completed in just eight short weeks.
Clive Martin, Commercial Manager at Aggregate Industries said: “We’re proud to have played our part in ensuring the people of Bournemouth have safe, clean drinking water. This could have been a difficult project to complete, with a tight turn around on timescales and some logistical challenges, but our agile approach and ability to adapt enabled our expert team to deliver a fantastic service.”
